5. WorldCat@OSU: Getting Items

Getting Items - Results List Overview

Depending on which tab you selected, your results list may include citation information for articles, books, and other formats

Items that are available locally will be near the top.  OhioLINK items will also float to the top.  Notice icons for the item type.

Getting Items - Getting a Book (or DVD, CD, microform...)

Item available at OSU:

If an item is available at Ohio State or within OhioLINK, you'll see that information in the results list.  Click on a title to see more about it (scroll down for availability information). Use  the Request Item button provided to have the item sent to a convenient library location.  If you have a campus address, such as a dorm or an office, may have it checked out to you and delivered there via campus mail (pick up at a library location is quicker and prevents loss in the mail).  Alternatively, you may also note the call number and location to get it from the location by traveling there yourself.

Movie Time!

View the WorldCat@OSU Book Title Search video to see how to find a book.

If OSU's copy is checked out, look for availability in OhioLINK - you'll likely get this copy sooner than putting in a request for OSU's checked out copy!

Item not at OSU, but available via OhioLINK:

Click the Request Item button.  This works similar to the button mentioned above.

Item available online (e-books, government documents, etc.):

Click on the Check for Electronic Resources to check for access.  Select items may have a direct View Online link to the electronic text.

Item not available at OSU or OhioLINK (requesting requires that you set up a free interlibrary loan account):

You may request books, DVDs, and more via interlibrary loan.  Our Interlibrary Services Office must obtain these items for you. Articles and book chapters will be delivered electronically.

Not-yet-published items and textbooks cannot be requested.  It may be hard to find a copy of  new items and reference books, as well as certain formats of items (DVDs, CDs) that can be sent to OSU.  But give it a try!

Getting an article

Many items available electronically will have a direct link to the item in the results list:

Click on an article title to view more details about it, including electronic and/or print availability.

If a link to the full text is provided, simply click on the link to obtain the full text of the article.

If you don't see such a link, click on the article title.  Use the Check for Electronic Resources button to check for availability (both electronic AND print) at OSU.

The resulting page will have a link for interlibrary loan for items not available electronically.

See Access to a Known Journal Article for more assistance with getting articles from a citation.
