3. WorldCat@OSU: Getting Started

Your starting place is the OSU Libraries' homepage, where you will see four tabs from which you may choose.  The Search All tab, on the far left, is the default tab.  These are the available tabs:

Search All

search all

Under the Search All tab, you'll have the opportunity to search for everything searchable by WorldCat@OSU.  This tab brings together millions of books, journal articles, audiovisual materials, and more.

Note: Off-campus users will be asked to sign in with an OSU name.# and password or proceed as a guest for fewer options.

Selecting Databases:

Click on the Advanced Search link to go to an advanced search screen with additional options.  You can choose to search specific databases:

database add remove

Click the Add / Remove database button to choose which databases to search (there are more available than the ones WorldCat@OSU searches by default).   The WorldCat.org database includes books, journal articles, and more.  The other databases are a mixture of general and subject-specific databases, most of which specialize in journal articles.

Don’t know which database to add/remove?  You can hover over it and see a short description, such as this one for ERIC:

hover over database

Not all databases and journals are searchable via WorldCat@OSU.

Books and More

books and more tab

Under the Books and More tab on the OSU Libraries home page, you'll see an option for searching WorldCat@OSU.   You'll only be searching for books, e-books, audiovisual items, and journal titles (not articles within the journals). From here, you may choose to search the OSU Library Catalog or the OhioLINK Catalog instead.

Articles

articles tab

Under the Articles tab on the OSU Libraries home page, you will be using WorldCat@OSU to search only for articles.

From this tab, you can also look at a list research databases available via OSU (many not searchingable via WorldCat@OSU, including those that may be more specific to your subject area) and the Online Journals list for access to OSU's electronic journals by title. Not all databases and journals are searchable via WorldCat@OSU.

Note: Off-campus users will be asked to sign in with an OSU name.# and password or proceed as a guest for fewer options.

Reference

reference

This tab does not search WorldCat@OSU, but does allow OSU users to search a group of online reference tools for background information on a topic.

Activity

Go to the OSU Libraries' homepage and click on the Advanced Search link in the Search All tab.  Choose the Add/Remove Databases button and examine databases available.  Is there one there for a subject area in which you regularly do research? Share it below.
