Searching the Library Catalog > Overview - Key Ideas

Begin the tutorial by clicking the first link, or select any page to review.

  1. About the Catalog: Use the catalog and circulation system for Ohio State University Libraries to find and borrow books, journals and other resources owned or licensed by the Libraries. Catalog records include library location and availability (status) information.

  2. Catalog Search Tips: When searching, use the most specific information you have at hand. Look at examples on catalog screens as you construct your search. Adjust your search if you find too much or too little.

  3. Title, Author Searches: Use the TITLE search when you know at least the beginning part of the title of a work. Words must be entered in the exact order in which they appear in the title. To search for works by a particular AUTHOR, enter the author's last name, then first name.

  4. Subject and Keyword Searches: When searching for information on a topic, start with the KEYWORD search. The SUBJECT search, which is more precise, uses controlled vocabulary (subject headings).

  5. Limiting, Saving, Borrowing: Use Limit features in the catalog to reduce the size of your search results. Save and export any records that are useful. Request items that you want to borrow. Login to save searches and renew materials.
