About Web Browsers > Overview - Key Ideas

Begin the tutorial by clicking the first link, or select any page to review. [NOTE: Introductory browsing skills covered in Getting Started on the Web.]

  1. Browser Display Options: You can change the appearance of your browser (fonts, colors, toolbar) or the home page that is opened when you start it.

  2. Communication / Advanced Options: Other settings you can control are the size of the browser's cache, whether it will run interactive programs (Javascript is one type), and how cookie files are stored.

  3. Security and Privacy Settings: Check your browser's security options. Look for a closed lock icon on a Web page before entering sensitive information (such as a credit card number).

  4. Browser Add-ons: To extend the capabilities of your browser, download and install add-on applications (also called plug-ins, extensions).

  5. Managing Web Information: Use favorites or bookmarks to store pointers to Web sites von your computer or on the Web. Organize your pointers into folders. Capture entire Web documents by printing or saving the page.
