3. Selecting Good Information: Categorizing information by Publication Format
The video in the previous section showed us one way of categorizing information,
by publication format. This relates to the physical or labor terms of
production. If we categorize information this way, here are some more categories
we might think of:
This is certainly not an exhaustive list of publication types, but these are
the common ones.
Why do these categories matter?
- These labels are often used in common conversation and are sometimes
referred to in academic assignments. You should know the labels.
- It is a fact that most students use Google as a first choice to find
information. Google finds ALL these publication types. Recognizing that
Google results can be a real mixture of publication types requires that you
need to be willing to get any of these types in your results, or be able to
pick out the types you need.

- If you are able to determine that your information need requires one of
these specific types of publications, you may be able to find a tertiary
source that ONLY includes that publication type in its scope.
