Begin the tutorial by clicking the first link, or select any page to review.

  1. What Are Specialized Databases? A database is a collection of data arranged for ease and speed of search and retrieval. Databases are created to manage distinct sets or types of information. They are the most focused search tools on the Web.

  2. Types of Databases: Databases can be bibliographic, full text, numeric, directory, multimedia or mixed. Some are freely available to anyone. Others are fee-based, with access provided by your school or library.

  3. Database Features: To use a database effectively, you must understand the database's scope, record structure, and controlled vocabulary.

  4. Searching Databases: To search a database efficiently, be selective about your search terminology, search within database fields, and when possible use subject terms to find all related material.

  5. Finding Databases: Special Web indexes and directories are available to find specialized databases. Consult your local library's Web site or a librarian to know which fee-based (library) databases are available to you.
