5A: Locate Available Jobs

When you're ready to look for a job, the Web can speed up the process. There are three kinds of Web sites that you can use to find jobs:

Specialized job listing databases
  • CareerBuilder.com, to browse or search job listings by category, location, keyword.

  • Career OneStop, is a U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored Web site. Click on Job Search to connect to employment resources, including state job banks.

  • Clusty Jobs searches over 500 websites and job boards, the top 200 newspapers, hundreds of associations, and company career pages.
  • Monster.com, the most popular job database.

  • MonsterTRAK, especially for college students.

  • WorkForce 411, to locate jobs only within Ohio.

  • Job-Hunt.org, a guide to many different types of job listing sites, including those focused on a particular field.

Web sites of companies, organizations, governments
If you know of particular companies that you want to work for, check their Web sites for employment opportunities. For example:

5B: Applying For A Job

After locating job opportunities, it's time to focus on presenting yourself well. There are many books that will help with this task, but some Web sites also provide good information. See:
