OSU Libraries: 2009 Teaching In Service

Register now to hear Therese Huston, author of the book Teaching What You Don't Know (Harvard University Press) and Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Seattle University. Read a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article for more information on her book. Participate in a breakout session to discuss particular aspects of her ideas in more depth with your colleagues. A final report back session of the day will let you hear what all the groups have discussed.

Breakout topics
Participate in a discussion on one of these topics.

• Backward thinking: Concentrating on what you want your students to be able to do, rather than what they need to know, at the end of the class.
• Asking the right questions: Using the text and colleagues to figure out the big questions on a topic that should drive the content of the course.
• Flexible syllabus: Thinking about ways to add wiggle room during a quarter/semester.
• Using case studies: Using real world scenarios to make students think and apply concepts from the course.

Book
Four copies of Therese's book are available at the Thompson Library Circulation Desk on 3 day reserve. (Shelved under "Teaching and Learning", you can tell the student on duty that they are next to the field guides.) Feel free to check out a copy ahead of time if you'd like to get familiar with this topic before the event. The books will remain available on reserve after the event as well.
